Who we are

Incorporated on 30 November 2020, the Irish Council for Human Rights is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation.

We aim to

Defend and promote human rights and civil liberties in Ireland

Inform public opinion on the matter of human rights and civil liberties

Monitor the situation of human rights and civil liberties in Ireland

Carry out research on issues impacting on civil liberties and human rights

Influence decision-making in areas of human rights and civil liberties and

Initiate legal action as necessary to protect and vindicate human rights and civil liberties

We believe there has never been a greater need for an organisation which seeks to defend the natural rights of the citizens of this country, given the erosion of our most basic fundamental freedoms during the year 2020.

You might ask why Ireland needs another NGO/NPO given that there are more than 32,000 non-profit organisations operating in the State. For one, unlike many of the other non-profits, the ICHR is not State funded, meaning that the ICHR is not required to censor its views for fear of funding repercussions.

Secondly, while other human rights organisations operating in the State promote ideas such as hate speech laws, protest exclusion zones, employment quotas based on race, sexuality or gender rather than merit and more, the ICHR is an organisation that is committed to defending and promoting the rights that already exist, rather than advocating for the further erosion of fundamental rights under the guise of the greater or common good.

And finally, we believe the establishment of the ICHR to be necessary given the overwhelming silence from other human rights organisations operating in the State to the restrictions implemented by the Irish Government under the Covid-19 laws.

Founded by Tracey and Neil O’Mahony, the ICHR shall work tirelessly to defend the human rights and constitutional protections of Irish citizens.
